How it's worked out

  • Size

    One ton of cooling is 12,000 Btu per hour.

  • Efficiency

    SEER2 is roughly Btu of cooling per watt-hour of electricity over a season. Higher means less electricity for the same cooling.

  • The sum

    kWh ≈ tons × 12,000 ÷ SEER2 ÷ 1,000 × hours × days.

  • Why it matters

    Compare an older system with a newer one at the same size to see the difference in kilowatt-hours.
